Where did Geoffrey come from? Ha. He was a funny throwaway comment in a post where I was explaining the theme for one of Queer Sci Fi's flash fiction contests. The theme was Innovation. The post went like this:
Innovation doesn't have to be about science and technology. Innovation can occur in any field. Any field at all.
The opera was an innovation in music when Jacopo Peri thought it would be a cool idea in 1597.
In architecture, Filippo Brunelleschi figured out how to make the first dome without a framework.
In art, Georges Seurat's great innovation was pointillism.
In necromancy, Geoffrey the Very Strange discovered that you could raise the dead by means of seashells and force of will instead of blood magic.
(OK, I made that last one up, but again, it would be innovation.)
Several people wanted Geoffrey's story, so I wrote it in my Notebook of Doom and set it aside for some day. Until Meghan asked me to be part of the Magic Emporium series and some day became now. :D
