Hello and happy holidays, everyone! This week, I'm reading to you from our friend, Ellie Thomas' new, timely for the season historical, Christmas Below Stairs. Come have a listen: Christmas Below Stairs by Ellie Thomas Amazon Universal Buy Link JMS Books At the age of twenty-three, Joseph Paul has come a long way from an abandoned foundling to the dizzy heights of a position as a second footman in London’s Bedford Square. But Joseph doesn’t want to remain in service forever and harbours ambitions to be his own master. Eli Turner might have become a valet by his thirties, but he is weary of his profession and lacks direction. He can’t even summon the energy to seek out a new position in a more prestigious household. Under ordinary circumstances, working as servants for the same family, these two men might not have the chance to exchange more than a few words, let alone confide their feelings. But when they both remain in the virtually deserted townhouse over Christmas, they take the opportunity to talk as equals and explore their mutual attraction. Is this just a short-lived holiday fling? Or might it be the start of a long-standing romance? About Ellie:
Ellie Thomas lives by the sea. She comes from a teaching background and goes for long seaside walks where she daydreams about history. She is a voracious reader especially about anything historical. She mainly writes historical gay romance. Ellie also writes historical erotic romance as L. E. Thomas. Happy December Friday, everyone! This week, I have a season-appropriate excerpt for you. What's that? Gothic romance isn't very holiday-ish? Ah, you're in for a treat, then. Mere Rain has given us an excerpt from her sapphic romance, the wonderfully Gothic In the Dark Heart of Winter! Come have a listen: In the Dark Heart of Winter by Mere Rain JMS Books Amazon Isabeau is having history’s worst honeymoon. Heart-broken when her lover and best friend Margaret married and moved away, she accepted the proposal of a distant cousin, but she regrets this decision even before he insists on taking her to his cold and ruinous ancestral home. Horace does not seem to care about her, either, and soon she begins to wonder about his motives. Her fears are compounded when strangers arrive seeking refuge from the snow, and her husband's behavior becomes strangely hostile. Vairya and Ranat seem friendly, but why are they in this isolated region at all? It can't be coincidence that they come from Persia, where her husband was until recently stationed as a diplomat. Eventually one visitor confides in Isabeau, but her claims are so wild they cannot be true. Can they? Should she trust her heart, and perhaps her survival, to this stranger who seems to share her forbidden desires? A note from Mere:
All my JMS books will be 50% off at Smashwords starting December 15th! https://www.smashwords.com/profile/view/mererain If you like darker Christmas stories I have two earlier pieces at Mischief Corner. Happy first Friday of December! This week, I'm reading to you from a LitRPG humor novel - My Three Year Old Is A Barbarian and Other Parenting Problems by Aaron Frale. A bit of dark humor - so go in forewarned!
My Three Year Old Is A Barbarian And Other Parenting Problems
by Aaron Frale Buy Links Necromantic rituals, murderous ogres, battle-scarred rangers: not a typical Saturday detention for unsuspecting teaching assistant, Petra, and her delinquent teen charges. The Beaverton High School Breakfast Club show up for what they thought would be cleaning the locker room with a toothbrush when the morning goes horribly wrong, and they fall victim to a deadly, dark spell. Some jerkwad moon mage shoves the consciousness of Petra’s three-year-old into the body of a musclebound barbarian, and she is transformed into a halfling. The kids get stuck as a cleric, fire mage, and other stalwarts of your typical fantasy gaming party. Now they must quest through a land of pissed-off warriors, angry giants, a pompous vampire, and a necromancer out to kill Petra and her child. Despite being in a world where everything threatens to shuffle off her mortal coil, the hardest part is convincing a hulked-out man that the battle axe is not a toy, the undead are not cuddly, and he should use the potty.
About Aaron:
Good times and hope for a better future. Maybe some fun time travel adventures or interdimensional travelers. A toddler stuck in a barbarian and his mom in a halfling. "Comedy and" is my jam. When not writing, I can be found teaching, podcasting Aaron’s Horror Show, and screaming while playing guitar for the band Spiral. Life has brought my wife, myself, and my son to Montana, where we reside at the moment.
