Today we have a special reading - an entire short story! Shine On Harvest Moon is by the wonderful Jeff Baker - and I'll explain a little about it in the audio: Shine On Harvest Moon A Demeter's Bar story by Jeff Baker ABOUT THE STORY: The Demeter’s Bar Stories came about because of two books of barroom tall tales I loved; “Tales From Gavagan’s Bar” by L. Sprague DeCamp and Fletcher Pratt (fantasy stories), and “Tales From The White Hart,” by Arthur C. Clarke (science fiction stories.) I was thinking one day about the fact that while Arthur C. Clarke was gay he didn’t write about a lot of LGBT characters (he didn’t live in that era) and I thought of his “White Hart” stories and realized nobody has done a series of science fictional stories told in a gay bar. So I created Demeter’s Bar, based a little on a couple of places I knew and when (to my utter shock) the first two stories were published, I was off and running and have about seven stories finished so far. “Shine On Harvest Moon” was written from a picture prompt (of men frolicking in the ocean) on the Friday Flash Fics Facebook page, and appeared on the authorjeffbaker.com website April 20, 2018. authorjeffbaker, com ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
Called “(one of) the hottest authors in the independent horror scene,” by Hellbound Books in 2017, Jeff Baker grew up reading comic books, Arthur Conan Doyle stories and watching T.V. shows like “Night Gallery.” He has made a living as a truck driver for over 25 years and writes on the side. His stories can be found in several of the QueerSciFi anthologies, and places like Sherlock Holmes Mystery Magazine. He lives happily in Wichita, Kansas with his husband Darryl.

Picture us sliding into home plate... On second thought, don't picture that. Scary thought. Terrible visuals aside, Trysts and Burning Embers: Lijun 2 is scheduled for pre-order starting October 9 with an October 30 scheduled release. One of our betas declared it a multiple tissue story while another is probably still mad at us. :) (We love our betas!) We've started some thinking on Lijun 3, but that's for later. Happy Friday, everyone! Today's reading is from a new urban fantasy by E.M. Hamill - gods and angels and potential supernatural disaster! Pull up a chair and have a listen. :) Nectar and Ambrosia An Amaranthine Inheritance Novel By E.M. Hamill Genre: Urban Fantasy, Mythological, LGBTQ Publisher: Star Bard Books Date of Publication: June 30, 2018 Word Count: 82 K Cover Artist: Katharine Henry Alexander Callie, a Classics major, flees home to protect her family from a monster straight out of mythology. Visions lead her to Nectar and Ambrosia: the weirdest pub on Earth, where inter-dimensional travelers with attention seeking issues get drunk in between the A-list celebrity lives they create. They can't pretend to be gods anymore—not since a treaty with the current Supreme Deity promising they won't intervene in human affairs. The Doorkeeper of this threshold, Florian, rides herd on the rowdy Amaranthine and offers her shelter and a job. Callie likes the lonely, mysterious bartender more than she should. For Florian, her presence is a ray of light in the gray monotony of his sentence behind the bar, but he keeps a cautious distance—the truth of how he became Doorkeeper could change Callie's perception of him forever. When angels show up for a war council over Zeus's irrational mutters about a comeback, Callie has uncontrolled visions of an apocalypse. Ex-gods realize she’s the first Oracle Priestess in generations. All Callie wanted was keep her parents safe, and now it seems she must sacrifice her future to keep the rest of humanity safe, too. Ambrosia could be the key to harnessing her visions— or it could cost her life. War is coming. The threshold between worlds has never been more fragile. Callie must discover who is pulling Zeus's strings and avert the final battle—before the immortal vying to become the next Supreme Deity kills her first. Our special guest this week for Reading Day is Layla Dorine, who's been kind enough to share a bit of her future-Earth SF short story, Teaching Love To A Clone. Tangled ethics in a charged political environment! Teaching Love To A Clone by Layla Dorine Mankind’s war with visitors from a different world once left the human population reeling, but scientific advances soon allowed them the unique opportunity to preserve their species through the act of cloning. By sending the clones out to fight in the war, humanity was able to rebound, but none gave a thought to what would happen if a clone should learn to think of itself as anything but a weapon. For Corbin, the night janitor in the cloning lab where generations of clones have been created, there is no longer anything jarring about seeing a partially formed clone move for the first time within the confines of it’s gestation chamber. He keeps his head down and his music up, trying to survive the war in the hopes that there might be something left of the world when the fighting is through. That all changes when he realizes that one of the latest clones, Ronin, is actually responding to the music. Doing what he swore he’d never do, Corbin becomes invested in Ronin’s development, communicates back and forth to him through the glass, and later, teaches him about what he is, why he was created, and so much more. Beneath the backdrop of politics, questionable ethics, and the tail end of war, Corbin sets out to do something that the generals, the scientists, and even those who offered their genetic material to the cloning process never considered possible: Teaching a Clone to Love. Amazon and Kindle Unlimited About the Author:
LAYLA DORINE lives among the sprawling prairies of Midwestern America, in a house with more cats than people. She loves hiking, fishing, swimming, martial arts, camping out, photography, cooking, and dabbling with several artistic mediums. In addition, she loves to travel and visit museums, historic, and haunted places. Layla got hooked on writing as a child, starting with poetry and then branching out, and she hasn’t stopped writing since. Hard times, troubled times, the lives of her characters are never easy, but then what life is? The story is in the struggle, the journey, the triumphs and the falls. She writes about artists, musicians, loners, drifters, dreamers, hippies, bikers, truckers, hunters and all the other folks that she’s met and fallen in love with over the years. Sometimes she writes urban romance and sometimes its aliens crash landing near a roadside bar. When she isn’t writing, or wandering somewhere outdoors, she can often be found curled up with a good book and a kitty on her lap. Seriously, how did it get to be August? Didn't we just start this year? *thousand yard stare at 2018*
So... The stuff going on. Beside a Black Tarn Audio has launched. We talked about that. Diego: Endangered Fae 2 launches on August 14 - yay! Freddy and I have Lijun 2 due at the editor August 15 - eek!!! (Almost there, though.) And I really hate summer. Just needed to say that. |
