Hello and Happy Friday! I've returned to the cold and cloudy north (where, let's face it, I'm actually better acclimated.) This week's reading is from book 2 of EJ Russell's Supernatural Selection series - Vampire With Benefits. I mean, really. A supernatural matchmaking agency - how can a reader resist? Vampire With Benefits
Supernatural Selection #2 by EJ Russell A match between a vampire and shifter could be deadly—but one broken beaver doesn’t give a dam. Silent film actor Casimir Moreau had imagined that life as a vampire would be freewheeling and glamorous. Instead, he’s plunged into a restrictive society whose rules he runs afoul of at every turn. To “rehabilitate” him, the vampire council orders him mated to an incubus with impeccable breeding who’ll mold Cas into the upstanding vampire he ought to be. Or else. As an inactive beaver shifter, construction engineer Rusty Johnson has fought—and overcome—bias and disrespect his entire life. But when his longtime boyfriend leaves him for political reasons, Rusty is ready to call it a day. Next stop? Supernatural Selection and his guaranteed perfect mate, a bear shifter living far away from Rusty’s disapproving clan. But then a spell snafu at Supernatural Selection robs both men of their intended husbands. Rusty can’t face returning to his clan, and Cas needs somebody on his arm to keep the council happy, so they agree to pretend to be married. Nobody needs to know their relationship is fake—especially since it’s starting to feel suspiciously like the real thing. Buy links: Amazon Other retailers Publisher About E.J. E.J. Russell—grace, mother of three, recovering actor—holds a BA and an MFA in theater, so naturally she’s spent the last three decades as a financial manager, database designer, and business intelligence consultant (as one does). She’s recently abandoned data wrangling, however, and spends her days wrestling words. Her paranormal romantic comedy, The Druid Next Door, was a 2018 RITA® finalist and the winner of the 2017 Rainbow Award for Best Gay Fantasy Romance. E.J. is married to Curmudgeonly Husband, a man who cares even less about sports than she does. Luckily, CH loves to cook, or all three of their children (Lovely Daughter and Darling Sons A and B) would have survived on nothing but Cheerios, beef jerky, and satsuma mandarins (the extent of E.J.’s culinary skill set). E.J. lives in rural Oregon, enjoys visits from her wonderful adult children, and indulges in good books, red wine, and the occasional hyperbole. Connect with E.J. Happy Friday! This week, I have something special - readings from 5 (five!) holiday stories, the first five in MCB's Escape From The Holidays collection. Very short excerpts, but enough to sample some flavors. :)
It's that time of year - and once again, Mischief Corner Books has a lovely holiday collection of stories for you. :D Contemporary, fantasy, paranormal, science fiction with queer characters all along the rainbow and holidays that aren't just about Christmas - MCB brings you stories of people trying, in some way, to get away from the holiday grind. Many of the stories have pre-order links - listed below! Releases begin November 28. :)
Hello and welcome again to Friday! This week's reading is from Kayla Jameth and her paranormal, Save a Horse, Dive a cowboy. :) A fun excerpt and a possible vocabulary word for you - come have a listen: Save A Horse, Dive A Cowboy
by Kayla Jameth Amazon (Kindle Unlimited) Author's Note: This twisted little story came about courtesy of Josh Lanyon who provided the "prompt", Felice Stevens who manned the pom-poms and demanded that I "WRITE ALL THE WORDS!", and Pam Singer who helped me iron out a few wrinkles. Shep's just your average all-American cowboy. He runs his own ranch and rides the occasional saddle bronc. Nothing special there. Unless you look too closely at his boyfriend. Descended from a long line of Native American mustang shifters, Charlie "Hoss" Running Horse is anything but average. When Coyote takes a shine to Shep, he decides that Hoss has got to go. With the theft of the medicine horseshoe that allows Hoss to shift from mustang to human, Coyote sets his evil plan to have his way with Shep in motion. Will Shep be able to save Hoss before it's too late? Or will Coyote's plan come to fruition? Almost there! Trysts and Burning Embers: Lijun 2 launches on Tuesday! I'll be in Barbados visiting family, but I'll try to keep on top of release stuff (and send pics :D ) Tally and Haru should have some peace now to work out their relationship, right? Yeah... the world has other ideas. Also, because I forget to mention it and the November edition just went out - if you'd like to sign up for my newsletter with all the comprehensive updates and things to come, you can find that on the home page or here: Angel Martinez - Writing News Fire. Water. Burn. In the two months since the All Hallows’ Eve party, Tally has courted Haru, buying expensive gifts, taking the two of them to upscale restaurants and trying to find a balance in earning Haru’s fragile trust while being new parents to the Cohen joeys. Tally sees hope in the new domesticity the family has settled into, despite having some bumps along the way. Gifts and treats have satisfied Haru’s otter, but the human half remembers the brutal lessons of giving their trust away. How can two lijun who barely know each other anticipate what will happen when times get tough? There are circumstances Tally doesn’t understand yet, and Haru struggles to find their feet with an Urusar who doesn’t know the rules. A revelation not only throws the tentative relationship between them askew, but also starts Tally and Haru down a path the two of them can’t escape, one so heart-wrenching Haru’s not sure their heart will survive. Traditionalist concerns that have always nipped at the Bastille clan’s heels come roaring to the forefront with demands and ultimatums. Tally needs to fall in line or face further threats to his otter, his family and his clan. Haru needs to find the strength to believe in the good despite the bad. In an environment where it’s vital to know ally from foe, Tally and Haru need to stand united or watch the community Tally’s family has built fall under the thumb of heartless, greedy autocrats. Hello again and welcome to Reading Day! This week we have the return of the Liminal Sky series by J. Scott Coatsworth, with the release last Tuesday of The Rising Tide. Queer science fiction! Come have a listen :)
(Scott's also running a giveaway, so look for the Rafflecopter at the bottom!)
The Rising Tide
Liminal Sky 2 by J. Scott Coatsworth DSP Publications Paperback Amazon Barnes & Noble Kobo iBooks: Earth is dead. Five years later, the remnants of humanity travel through the stars inside Forever, a living, ever-evolving, self-contained generation ship. When Eddy Tremaine and Andy Hammond find a hidden world-within-a-world under the mountains, the discovery triggers a chain of events that could fundamentally alter or extinguish life as they know it, culminate in the takeover of the world mind, and end free will for humankind. Control the AI, control the people. Eddy, Andy, and a handful of other unlikely heroes—people of every race and identity, and some who aren’t even human—must find the courage and ingenuity to stand against the rising tide. Otherwise they might be living through the end days of human history. Halloween is over, so I feel it's now acceptable to start talking about holiday stories. Let this post serve as the early warning system for the Mischief Corner Books holiday stories coming up this year. No, they don't start until after Thanksgiving. Yes, I may be a little excited. For "Escape From The Holidays", MCB asked authors to write stories about getting away from the holiday grind - traveling somewhere new, getting involved in someone else's traditions, leaving the same old-same old behind. :)
There will be ten stories from a wonderful line up of authors for you this year (some shorter, some longer - various holidays represented), releasing as follows: 11/28: Stay Awhile by Kassandra Lea (m/m, ace character, contemporary) 12/1: Burning Down the House by Gregory Norris (m/m, contemporary) 12/5: The Holiday Spirit by Carole Cummings (m/m, fantasy) 12/8: Slow Thaw by J.
