Happy Sticky Summer Friday, everyone! I hope your weather isn't too bad and that you're staying cool. This week, Ellie Thomas is back with a brand new historical for me to read from. This one takes place just prior to the Restoration, a fascinating and messy period in British history :D Come have a listen! Lucky John by Ellie Thomas JMS Books Owen Montgomery has been a landless drifter since the Royalist defeat at the Battle of Worcester nine years previously when he was seventeen. Since then, he has lingered abroad as an insignificant follower in the retinue of exiled King Charles. In the spring of 1660, Owen travels across England as an envoy on behalf of the King. Despite this important diplomatic mission, Owen regards himself as little better than the highwaymen he encounters on the lawless roads. During a brief stop at an obscure roadside inn, he encounters Lucky John, a bullied skivvy with a sweet nature who makes a lasting impression. When Owen impulsively rescues John from his unkind employer, he has no idea of the impact the lad will make on his lonely existence. Will Owen reject this chance to open up and share his life? And can Owen be convinced that he deserves John’s love? About Ellie:

Hello all! It's time for steampunk and airships and etheric flows! This week, I have an excerpt from the final story in Steven Brewer's Revin's Heart series, Rewriting the Rules. Come have a listen :D
Rewriting the Rules
Revin's Heart #7 by Steven Brewer Universal Buy Link When peace is no longer possible, one must either go to war or run away. Abandoned by the nobility, everything goes wrong for Revin and he makes a run for it, ready to give up all hope. But when confronted with the choice he must make, will his heart lead him true?
About Steven:
Steven D. Brewer has been a fan of science fiction and fantasy stories for as long as he can remember. He still remembers getting scolded for not reading chapter books in fourth grade because he was avidly consuming the Hobbit, late at night, by flashlight under his covers. And he probably got his copy from his older brother and most important mentor. As an author, Brewer identifies diverse obsessions that underlie his writing. His early interest in natural history, life science, and environmentalism he learned from his father, an ecologist and ornithologist. He attributes seeing his mother study German for his abiding passion for languages that led him to major in Spanish (as well as Biology) and subsequently learn Esperanto and use it for international correspondence and travel. His fascination with Japanese culture grew from writing haiku and haibun in Esperanto. And his mania for information technology and the Internet led him back to graduate school where he earned a Masters in Earth Science and a PhD in Science Education. His scattered interests led to an eclectic employment history. He did farm work and food service growing up in southwest Michigan. He has worked as a large-animal caretaker, an archeological faunal analyst, a hunter of the fastest lizards in the world, a gas-station attendant, a bilingual teacher's aide for a migrant-worker education program, and an edutainer with live animals and a portable planetarium. For the past quarter century he has served as a non-tenure-system faculty member in higher education. Brewer currently teaches scientific writing at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. He lives in Amherst, Massachusetts with his extended family. This week, I'm reading to you from some of the stories in the upcoming charity anthology, Midnight in the Renaissance Elevator. This is the first of these posts, and I'll have several of them by the time the anthology launches on September 1! For this installment, I have 3 excerpts: Stop Draggin' My Heart Up and Down by Bix Barrow Saved by the Bell by Kaje Harper Somewhere Below the Basement by Angel Martinez (I swear I didn't plan the whole "starts with 'S'" title thing.) Come have a listen! Midnight in the Renaissance Elevator
A Charity Anthology *Up for preorder now at Amazon, releasing September 1!* Do you like mechanical devices with personality? Sure, who doesn’t? How about when they hold your life in the palm of their hands? Hmm…less sure now, yes? Don’t worry, you’re gonna love this. At an LGBTQ literary retreat in October of 2022, a group of authors met a particularly cantankerous elevator. Doors slamming open or closed for no apparent reason? Check. Scary noises, also for no apparent reason? Also, check. Were we concerned for our lives? Okay, listen… This cranky elevator figured heavily into conversations for the next few days, many of which included expletives in a dozen languages, but eventually, it became a (somewhat) beloved mascot. Some people actually chose it over the other elevators! The resulting mayhem is over twenty-five different author takes on the underlying story behind the elevator’s peculiar behavior. Possession? Poltergeists? Personified mechanical objects? Vampires? All these unique stories come together in one volume: Midnight in the Renaissance Elevator. Join us as we attempt to explain the unexplainable, rationalize the unrationalizable, and give imagination free rein. Proceeds for the sale of this book benefit The Trevor Project, which provides crisis support services to LGBTQ young people. More information can be found about this worthy cause at https://www.thetrevorproject.org/ Happy Friday, all! It's time for me to read to you! And what could be more appropriate for the first Friday in May than May Wedding, the brand new Regency romance novella from our friend, Ellie Thomas. This is #6 in the Twelve Letters series for those of you filling out your book dance card. We're back with characters we know and love - the wedding of Percy's sister may have given Jo and Daniel ideas... The Honourable Percy Havilland is at full organisational pelt for his sister’s triumphant society marriage, ably backed by his friends. His frequent stress-induced outbursts are endured by his ever-patient lover, Nathan. Percy has mixed feelings about the upcoming nuptials, the sorrow at losing one of his precious sisters balanced by the opportunity of exhibiting his exquisite good taste to make this the wedding of the Season. His friend Jo Everett reacts differently to the wedding, desiring an equivalent opportunity to mark his enduring love for Daniel Walters. Will Percy manage to survive the wedding without falling out irreparably with Nathan? And might Jo and Daniel discover they have the support of their close circle to celebrate their own special day? Midnight in the Renaissance Elevator will have 27 stories and is up for pre-order now! All proceeds go to the Trevor Project. :) For a tiny bit of background, the idea for the anthology came out of a shared experience at GRL 2022. The hotel's elevators were mostly polite and well-behaved, but there was one... The angry elevator. The haunted elevator. Instead of closing its doors nicely, this elevator would *SLAM* as if furious with the world and everyone in it. It was disconcerting, to say the least. So 27 authors have written stories for this anthology in, around, and regarding that elevator, at 5K words or less each. It's quite the list! :D The antho is $2.99 during the pre-order period and will go to its normal price of $5.99 on release day. Authors and story titles so far are:
No one will be shocked, I think, if I mention mine involves demons. Pick up your copy at Amazon - release date is September 1! It's next week! Galactic D&I (Diversity and Inclusion) will take place at the Philadelphia Convention Center, May 5-7!
Tons of Star Trek folks will be there (like Terry Farrell and Tim Russ and so on), as well as other actors from The Orville, The Expanse, etc. The Gaaays in Space folks who organized the convention have tons of fun things planned. I'll be in the vendor hall - and it's not a huge crowd of vendors so you should be able to find me easily - at the Mischief Corner Books table. There are day passes and weekend passes available, so come say hi!
