About R J:
R J Theodore is an author, graphic designer, podcaster, and all-around collector of creative endeavors and hobbies. She enjoys writing about magic-infused technologies, first contact events, and bioluminescing landscapes. Her love of SFF storytelling developed through grabbing for anything-and-everything “unicorn” as a child, but she was subverted by tales of distant solar systems when her brother introduced her to Star Trek: The Next Generation at age seven. A few years later, Sailor Moon taught her stories can have both. She lives in New England, haunted by her childhood cat. Find more information at rjtheodore.com. Happy Friday, everyone! Come on in for this week's excerpt! This week I'm reading to you from Aldrea Alien's new dark fantasy, Tracking Trouble, part of her Spellsters Universe, in which we meet Tracker himself. World-weary heroes are some of my favorites. :D Come have a listen: Tracking Trouble A Spellster Novel by Aldrea Alien Amazon KU For years, Tracker’s life has had two facets: Hunting spellsters and entertaining strangers in his bed. Few doubt he’s good at both, although only one is considered acceptable amongst the King’s Hounds. His trip to Toptower should be just another task in an endless string of routine. Take down any dangerous spellster he finds and send the timid ones to Demarn’s tower prison. It is a role he was born to play. One he has grown weary of. But there’s something off about the spellsters he’s encountering. The people he typically finds aren’t usually this powerful or anywhere near as lethal to a man immune to magic. It’s as if something, or someone, is releasing them with an eye to weaken an already harried kingdom. To what end, he cannot be certain of. History is littered with the dangers of magic running unchecked. He must uncover the truth, and quickly. But with all leads pointing one way, will he be able to uphold the code of the King’s Hounds once he finds it? About Aldrea:
Aldrea Alien is an award-winning, bisexual author of fantasy romance with varying heat levels. Born and raised in New Zealand, she lives on a small farm with her family, including a menagerie of animals, who are all convinced they're just as human as the next person. Especially the cats. Since discovering a love of writing at the age of twelve, she hasn’t found an ounce of peace from the characters plaguing her mind with all of them clamouring for her to tell their story first. This week's Reading Day brings us back to the Starship Teapot with all her odd and loveable crew - come have a listen as we walk into the aftermath of a transport job that needed a warning label: Judgement Dave Starship Teapot 2 by SI Clarke Books2Read This time, the universe puts the cat in catastrophe… Lem is adapting to her new home aboard a strange spaceship in an even stranger universe, where the misfit crew of the Teapot have more than enough trouble on their hands running their interplanetary charter service. But when they accept an urgent assignment, they have just one week to save a race of cat-people from certain destruction. Stuck with a disaster-platypus of a project manager and a population seemingly determined to thwart their own rescue, the Teapotters face the impossible job of herding cats and evacuating the planet before it’s blown to smithereens. Can Lem and the gang avert disaster and save this race of infuriating cat-people? Perfect for fans of wacky and imaginative sci-fi stories, this satirical space opera is a ridiculous adventure that will delight readers of John Scalzi’s take on Fuzzy Nation or TJ Berry’s Space Unicorn Blues. SI CLARKE is a Canadian misanthrope who lives in Deptford, sarf ees London. She shares her home with her partner and an assortment of waifs and strays. When not writing convoluted, inefficient stories, she spends her time telling financial services firms to behave more efficiently. When not doing either of those things, she can be found in the pub or shouting at people online — occasionally practising efficiency by doing both at once. As someone who’s neurodivergent, an immigrant, and the proud owner of an invisible disability, she strives to present a realistically diverse array of characters in her stories. https://www.goodreads.com/clacksee https://twitter.com/clacksee https://www.instagram.com/clacksee_author/ https://www.bookbub.com/authors/si-clarke https://www.readerly.com/readers/clacksee https://whitehartfiction.co.uk/newsletter/ Hello, everyone, and Happy 2022! This week, I have another seasonal offering to share - a bit of historical Christmas escapades from Ellie Thomas's new short, A Midwinter Night's Magic. Former lovers in a forced proximity situation and some Shakespeare! Come have a listen. :) A Midwinter Night's Magic by Ellie Thomas Universal Buy Link In late 18th-century England, when Matthew Lewis accidentally accepts an invitation to a festive country house party, he vows to stay only for as long as is polite. However, not only is there a heavy snowfall to detain him but also, the guests are expected to take part in a recital of A Midsummer Night’s Dream on Christmas Day. If amateur theatricals are not enough to contend with, the unexpected presence of former lover Crispin Marley is sent to try his frayed patience. The pair has had no contact since Crispin abandoned him with no explanation four years previously. Matthew is determined to feel nothing but enmity towards his lost love. But the influence of the play can change everything. Can Puck sprinkle a little fairy magic to bring this warring couple back together? About Ellie:
Ellie Thomas lives by the sea. She comes from a teaching background and goes for long seaside walks where she daydreams about history. She is a voracious reader especially about anything historical. She mainly writes historical gay romance. Ellie also writes historical erotic romance as L. E. Thomas. https://elliethomasromance.wordpress.com/ https://www.facebook.com/elliethomasauthor/ It's the last Friday of 2021! Huzzah and good riddance! But you do get one more Reading Day. :D Here's me blabbing about AURA the series and about Ryld's Shadows: AURA 4 before I read you a wee bit of an excerpt: Ryld's Shadows
AURA 4 by Bellora Quinn & Angel Martinez Up for pre-order January 25! AURA's offices have been quiet since the mage tower incident—as quiet as they can be for an agency dedicated to policing holes in reality—and the department heads have been free to turn their attention back to mundane matters. The return to quiet bureaucracy gives AURA's Director of Research, Kai Hiltas, the time to turn his energy to a new issue: a young drow with unusual and dangerous powers named Ryld. Though his shadows always lurk at the edges of his vision, Ryld does his best to live quietly and not let them hurt anyone. He has his work, his apartment, and a succession of minders assigned by AURA who are, ostensibly, there to keep him safe in his new world and to prevent him from causing any scenes with his shadows. Most of the time, the arrangement works. But one disastrous incident causes Ryld's minder to leave him unattended and lost—the precise thing he was hired to prevent. To replace the faithless minder, Kai proposes Hank, a half-goblin accountant recently in the middle of a string of terrible luck, while Kai works out how best to get Ryld the magical training he so desperately needs. For his part, Hank truly likes Ryld and insists he would be happier working as Ryld's companion rather than as a controlling minder. As Hank and Ryld slowly come to terms with sharing space—and eventually more—Kai's search for a teacher for Ryld takes them out west on the invitation of the Elvenhome's aelfe queen and right into the lap of inter-elven feuds, ancient prejudice, conspiracies and trafficking rings. What should have been a pleasant visit soon turns into more than even forever-scheming Kai can handle. Happy Friday and Merry Christmas Eve for all our readers who celebrate! This week, I have an excerpt to read to you from a Christmas Eve story - hooray! Nell Iris brings us "The Santa Emergency" - come have a listen :) The Santa Emergency by Nell Iris JMS Books Universal Book Link I have a Santa emergency and I desperately need your help. Sigge isn’t exactly a grinch when it comes to Christmas, but he’s not a fan of the holiday either. So when his new neighbor Kristian shows up in a panic, begging him to help by donning a Santa suit, Sigge’s gut reaction is to say no. But Kristian is cute and funny, rendering Sigge powerless against his heartfelt plea—especially after a promise of spending more time together—so he agrees. The instant connection deepens as they share mulled wine and conversation as easy as breathing. But is it just holiday magic swirling in the air, or is it something real? Something that will last into the new year and beyond? About Nell:
Nell Iris is a romantic at heart who believes everyone deserves a happy ending. She’s a bona fide bookworm (learned to read long before she started school), wouldn’t dream of going anywhere without something to read (not even the ladies room), loves music (and singing along at the top of her voice but she’s no Celine Dion), and is a real Star Trek nerd (Make it so). She loves words, bullet journals, poetry, wine, coffee-flavored kisses, and fika (a Swedish cultural thing involving coffee and pastry!) Nell believes passionately in equality for all regardless of race, gender or sexuality, and wants to make the world a better, less hateful, place. Nell is a bisexual Swedish woman married to the love of her life, a proud mama of a grown daughter, and is approaching 50 faster than she’d like. She lives in the south of Sweden where she spends her days thinking up stories about people falling in love. After dreaming about being a writer for most of her life, she finally was in a place where she could pursue her dream and released her first book in 2017. Nell Iris writes gay romance, prefers sweet over angsty, short over long, and quirky characters over alpha males. This week I have something not only appropriate for the season, but full of fae. What could be better? :D The Solstice Gift is the first book of a new dark fantasy series by Cari Z - eee! Come have a listen: The Solstice Gift Solstice #1 by Cari Z Kindle Unlimited How long can a human survive in the treacherous court of the winter fae, when even his allies are fighting for their lives? Dis is a changeling, a human stolen away from his own world as a child by the vicious winter fae. He's survived to adulthood through a combination of luck and careful oversight by his only ally, a fairy lord named Marten, but his success might have finally reached its end. It's the winter solstice, and Oberon's court is preparing for a hunt with a history of bloodshed, one that requires Dis to be an unwilling participant. Even if Dis lives through that, he's being watched by the king of the fae himself, and no one can save him if Oberon has marked him for sacrifice. About Cari:
Cari Z was a bookworm as a child and remains one to this day. In an effort to combat her antisocial reading behavior, she did all sorts of crazy things, from competitive gymnastics to alligator wresting (who even knew that was legal!) to finally joining the Peace Corps, which promptly sent her and her husband to the wilds of West Africa, stuck them in a hut, and said, "See ya!" She also started writing, because some things she just thought she could do better. She's still climbing that ladder, but can't stop herself from writing, or from sharing what she creates. Cari enjoys a wide range of literary genres, from the classics (get 'im, Ahab) to science fiction and fantasy of all types, to historical fiction and reference materials (no, seriously, there are so many great encyclopedias out there). She writes in a wide range of genres as well, but somehow 90% of what she produces ends up falling into the broad and exciting category of m/m erotica. There’s a sprinkling of f/m and f/f and even m/f/m in her repertoire, but her true love is man love. And there's a lot of love to go around. Cari has published short stories, novellas, and novels with numerous print and e-presses, and she also offers up a tremendous amount of free content on Literotica.com, under the name Carizabeth. https://authorcariz.com/ Happy Friday, everyone! This week, I'm reading a flash fiction piece to you from Jeff Baker, who does a lot of weird horror and science fiction short stories and flash pieces. This particular one is from a prompt and is a little shivery :o Come have a listen! About Jeff:
A columnist for Queer Sci Fi, Jeff Baker has been a truck driver, a stand-up comic, a medical courier and a full-time writer. He has been published in “The Necronomicon of Solar Pons” among other places. Baker blogs and posts fiction at authorjeffbaker About the character Bryce Going: The wandering Bryce Going first came into being for the “Monday Flash Fics” site in March of 2018. The prompt picture was of a young man entering an alley looking anxiously behind him. I immediately felt he was on the run and began to figure out why. Setting the series in the 1970s before omnipresent security cameras and cellphones that could be used to turn in a teenage Gay runaway fit perfectly. I named him “Bryce Going” after actress Joanna Going and because he was going somewhere. The “Bryce” was after a late college buddy of mine. I wrote several flash stories about Bryce before I realized that I was emulating one of my favorite writers, Manly Wade Wellman who likewise had wanderers encounter the supernatural. I may be in Seattle, but that doesn't mean I can't read to you! This week, I'm super excited to bring you an excerpt from the newest addition to Lexi Ander's Valespian Pact series - Cherish, newly released December 1. Lots of us have been waiting for this one, I know. So have we Gyrfalconi science fiction goodness, with lots of hatchlings! :D Come have a listen: Cherish Valespian Pact #4 by Lexi Ander Amazon Barnes and Noble Kobo Saving a life can change the course of history. Destin becomes their caretaker, endeavoring to save as many as possible, despite the emotional toll. Amidst the battle for survival, the universe shines on him and he bonds with not one but four people who give him a reason to keep fighting. When Valespia sends its Legions to the GyrFalconi’s aid, Destin and his bonded are eventually freed, only to face new cruelties from their own people. Freedom comes with its own trials, though, as a divide forms in GyrFalconi society between the winged and the wingless. Destin and his bonded are given a chance at true happiness and they keep what they claim, no matter what. Tags: The Twenty-Year War where Terrens really mucked things up, so many hatchlings, Love not Lust (yes, using caps there seemed necessary), survivors, bisexual characters, all the cute hatchlings, talking to spirits, low heat, protective chantelle, evil empress, courageous stags, polyamorous, Destin keeps collecting bonded, avian species screech... a lot, non-human ace spectrum characters, found family, underestimated batore, so many stags, Mar'Sani mentor, did I mention the cutest chicks ever? About Lexi:
Lexi has always been an avid reader, and at a young age started reading (secretly) her mother’s romances (the ones she was told not to touch). She was the only teenager she knew of who would be grounded from reading. Later, with a pencil and a note book, she wrote her own stories and shared them with friends because she loved to see their reactions. A Texas transplant, Lexi now kicks her boots up in the Midwest with her Yankee husband and her eighty-pound puppies named after vacuum cleaners. http://www.lexiander.com/ Happy Friday, everyone! A. L. Lester returns this week - and I get to read to you from her second installment in the Bradfield trilogy, The Quid Pro Quo! Post WWI historical, a touch of the paranormal and a mystery just for starters :D Come have a listen: The Quid Pro Quo Bradfield trilogy #2 by A.L. Lester Universal Book Link Village nurse Walter Kennett is content with his makeshift found-family in tiny Bradfield. However one midsummer morning a body is found floating in the village duck pond, dead by magical means. Detective Simon Frost arrives in Bradfield to investigate a inexplicable murder. The evidence seems to point to Lucille Hall-Bridges, who lives with doctor Sylvia Marks and nurse Walter Kennett at Courtfield House. Simon isn’t happy—he doesn’t believe Lucy is a murderer but he’s sure the three of them are hiding something. In the meantime, the draw he feels toward Walter takes him by surprise. Walter is in a dilemma, concealing Sylvia and Lucy’s relationship and not knowing how much to tell Frost about the paranormal possibilities of the murder. He isn’t interested in going to bed with anyone—he’s got a complicated life and has to know someone really well before he falls between the sheets. He’s taken aback by his own attraction to Detective Frost and angry when Frost appears to twist the spark between them to something transactional in nature.
