Hi all! Settle down out there - have a seat. Today we have the amazing Max Vos with us to share a little bit about his new paranormal, The V Unit, and to talk a little bit about one of my favorite subjects - sub genre writing. He's graciously agreed to give away an ecopy of the soon to be new release, so stay with us until the end for the Rafflecopter link. Max? ![]() Howdy y’all. It’s so good to be here. When I was asked to do a blog here and then told to just write about whatever, I cringed. First off, writers hate that. Come on; give us a crumb to start with at least. Then it is scary, because I know that sometimes I come off as a complete nut-job. That’s why my own blog is called the mad rambling’s of a gay man. That changed when a reader asked how I could jump from one sub-genre to another so easily. So, that is what I’m going to ramble on about. I’ve written a couple of books, numerous short stories and all of them are different. I never thought about it until this question arose. I had to think about it. Wanna know what I discovered? Nothing. Yep, I didn’t really have a reasonable answer. Well that was until 2 a.m. this morning. The short answer is, it isn’t me. It is the characters. It really is that simple. I know other authors do this drawn out plot line, and outline of how a story develops. I tried that. It went right out the window in a nano second. Nope. That didn’t work. You see I develop my characters first. I put a lot of time and thought into who they are. I don’t stop until I hear them clearly in my head. NOT always a good thing because sometimes they never shut up. When I first think of a story, it is the theme that generates the characters. After they are fully flushed out, it then becomes there story. I’m then only the vehicle that they use to tell their story. When they take over, I’m done. They do all the work. I just try and hold on for dear life and enjoy the ride. This brings me back to the original question: How do I jump sub-genres. I don’t. They do. It’s all about them.
